A calming bedroom for better sleep works with your body clock, not against it: cool the room to around 18°C, dim the lights an hour before bed, keep the space for sleep only, and get morning daylight to anchor your rhythm. Small, consistent changes to light, temperature and routine matter more than any single product.

What Temperature Should a Bedroom Be for Better Sleep?

Your body needs to drop in core temperature to fall asleep and stay there, and a bedroom that's too warm works against that signal all night, which is part of why so many women describe lying there wide awake despite being shattered. Aim for a room closer to 18°C than the 21 or 22°C that feels cosy for the rest of the house.

A warm bath or shower an hour or so before bed sounds like it would work against a cool room, but it does the opposite. It brings blood to the surface of your skin, and as that heat radiates off afterwards your core temperature drops faster than it would have done on its own. Time it to finish roughly an hour before you switch the light off.

Night sweats and sudden heat are common in perimenopause, and no amount of room temperature planning removes them entirely. What helps is giving yourself more room to adjust: layer bedding instead of one heavy duvet, choose breathable natural fibres over synthetic ones, and keep a window cracked if your street allows it. A glass of water by the bed means you're not standing in a bright bathroom at 2am trying to cool down.

Screens aren't the villain they're sometimes made out to be, but scrolling in bed under a bright display an hour before sleep isn't doing your winding-down any favours.

None of this needs to be perfect. The pattern that matters is roughly the same wake time and roughly the same wind-down each day, weekends included, so your body clock has something consistent to track.

What Should Be In (and Out of) a Calming Bedroom?

The most effective bedroom change isn't a product, it's a rule: use the bed for sleep and little else. Working from bed, scrolling through emails propped against the pillows, or eating dinner in front of a laptop all teach your brain that bed is a place for alertness. Over time that undoes the association between your bed and actually feeling sleepy.

Keep the room genuinely calm rather than merely tidy. Clutter on visible surfaces keeps your eyes and your mind busy in a way that's easy to underestimate. Soft, low lighting in the evening, blackout curtains or a blind that actually blocks streetlight, and a mattress and pillows that suit how you sleep now, not how you slept a decade ago, all count more than they get credit for.

Phones are the hardest habit to shift. If yours doubles as your alarm, that's reason enough to keep it by the bed, but consider putting it face down or across the room so checking it isn't the easiest thing your hand can do at 3am. A basic alarm clock solves this without any willpower involved.

Scent, sound and exact bedding preferences are personal. Some women sleep best in total silence, others need a fan or white noise running. There's no single correct setup, only the one that actually gets you to sleep.

How Do I Build a Wind-Down Routine That Works?

One well-established approach centres on behaviour you can start tonight rather than another supplement or gadget. It's built on stimulus control: consistent timing, a clear boundary between day and night, and getting out of bed if sleep isn't coming rather than lying there willing it. The ritual itself doesn't need to be perfect. What trains your brain to trust the pattern is doing it most nights.

Give yourself a buffer of 20 to 30 minutes before the light goes off where you're doing something low-stimulation. Reading a few pages, stretching on the floor, or simply laying out tomorrow's clothes all count. What matters is that it's the same rough shape most nights, so your body recognises it as the run-up to sleep rather than another task to finish.

If you're lying awake more than 20 minutes or so, get up. Go to another room, keep the lights low, and do something undemanding until you feel sleepy again, then go back. Staying in bed getting frustrated teaches your brain to associate the bed with wakefulness, which is the opposite of what you want.

Nobody hits eight hours every night, and that's fine. Consistency in the routine around sleep does more for how you feel than chasing a perfect number ever will.

What About Waking in the Night, Especially in Perimenopause?

Waking in the night is a normal part of sleep. Sleep naturally moves through lighter and deeper stages, and brief awakenings between cycles happen to most people most nights, whether they remember it in the morning or not. More often than not, it's what happens after you wake that turns a five-minute stir into a wide-awake hour.

Checking the time, doing the maths on how few hours are left, and starting to worry about tomorrow all switch your brain from drowsy back to alert. If you can, leave the clock face down or out of easy view, and treat a night waking as something to move through calmly rather than solve.

Night sweats add a physical layer on top of this in perimenopause. Keeping a cool flannel or water nearby, wearing something you can easily throw off, and having a fresh pillow within reach means you're not fully waking yourself up managing the discomfort, which matters more than it sounds.

None of this makes disrupted sleep disappear overnight. What it does is stop a difficult night turning into a difficult week, because you're not adding worry about the sleep on top of the sleep itself.
